Who cares? We all do.

A decade of caring together

Our story began in 2014, rooted in a shared and simple truth: We are all caregivers.

Together with our partners, we set out to build a program that supports health systems in caring for those who care for us the most — family caregivers.

The Care Companion Program is universal, yet specific and responsive to the world around it — with health education materials delivered in eight different languages, nutrition guidance that reflects local food traditions and availability, training tailored to different healthcare settings, from a community clinic in India to a newborn special care ward in Bangladesh or a puskesmas in Indonesia.

A decade later, that simple truth remains: Caregivers are at the core of it all, of us all.

On our tenth anniversary, we take a moment to celebrate those who care, whose commitment keeps our health systems churning, who hold us accountable to each other, and who should be supported, respected, and cared for as they hold our deepest struggles and greatest love through the intrinsic act of caring.

We recommit to their timeless power, reflect on our successes, and prepare for what it means for caregiver education and support to be a standard of care for everyone, everywhere.

Who cares? We all do.

We believe that high-quality, contextualized family caregiver training and support should be the norm and not the exception – for everyone, everywhere.

Caregivers trained
2012
  • The journey began in a corner of the d.school at Stanford, where our four original co-founders met in the “Extreme” graduate course, immersing themselves in design thinking, product and service design, rapid prototyping, and more. During a group project, they found themselves working with a valuable yet under-supported resource: the family members of hospital patients.
2013
  • The co-founders met Anand Kumar, an ICU nurse at Narayana Health, a hospital in Bangalore, India which partnered with the course. Anand led a unique training session for patients and caregivers on what to expect before and after cardiac surgery. This chance encounter in the hospital marked the beginning of Noora Health and a partnership that continues today.
  • The Care Companion Program was born: Anand and the co-founders launched a small pilot program at Narayana Health, with a positive response from the administration, patients, and families. We tested an array of prototypes, including videos featuring an engaging and dramatic Bollywood-like style. Anand guides our training curriculum to this very day.
2014
  • Accepted into Y Combinator, Noora Health is officially launched!
  • We made our first hire, Anubhav Arora, who is still with us today leading our platform teams.
  • Grounded in research: We began our first evaluation of the cardiology program at a tertiary care facility in Kolkata, India.
2015
  • Led an expansion of the cardiac Care Companion Program pilot across 20+ Narayana Health hospitals in India.
  • Launched the first public hospital partnership with Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in Bangalore, India.
2016
  • Launched our first government partnership with the state of Karnataka.
  • Expanded our condition areas to include maternal and newborn care, with support from the Karnataka state government to implement in one district hospital.
  • Named one of the 50 most innovative companies in the world and second in India by Fast Company Magazine.
2017
  • Expanded to our second state, Punjab, offering the maternal and neonatal care program to six district hospitals.
  • Designed and conducted a quasi-experimental study in partnership with IDInsight to examine the impact of our neonatal Care Companion Program in 11 district hospitals across two states in India.
2018
  • Tech and caregiving: Piloted our mobile engagement platform on WhatsApp, providing critical, medically-accurate information to people once they return home from the hospital.
  • Our first year of rapid scaling: Expanded the maternal and neonatal program in all district hospitals in Madhya Pradesh, our third state.
  • Introduced antenatal care, high-risk newborn care, and general inpatient care programs, beginning in four hospitals in Karnataka.
  • Partnered with Harvard’s Ariadne Labs and Stanford’s Center for Health Education to conduct rigorous research on our programs.
2019
  • Expanded to our second country of operation: Bangladesh
  • In two states, the Care Companion Program was recognized by the Indian ministry of health as a replicable and innovative practice in public health.
  • In partnership with UNICEF, we created our Special Newborn Care Unit program to complement the ones running in antenatal and postnatal care.
  • Our first evaluation, published in the Journal of Global Health Reports in October 2019, showed a 71% reduction in 30-day post-surgical complications among cardiac care patients in a tertiary care facility.
2020
  • Pandemic pivoting: Trained 5,000 frontline workers and provided virtual home isolation support to Covid-19 patients and their caregivers, reaching nearly 16 million people in India and Bangladesh. Collaborated with multiple organizations, governments, and individuals to develop up-to-date, educational content in relevant South Asian languages.
  • Published a manuscript in BMJ Global Health in partnership with Ariadne Labs suggesting that facility-based, family-focused postnatal education should be an integral component of healthcare. We then shared an update on the study to show a 54% reduction in newborn readmissions for the Care Companion Program-trained group versus the untrained group.
2021
  • In addition to hospitals, we expanded our operation to primary healthcare settings across health and wellness centers, beginning in Madhya Pradesh, India.
  • Expanded our condition areas to include tuberculosis.
  • Officially opened our second Noora Health office in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
  • Created and sold one of the most expensive NFTs for philanthropy, titled “Save Thousands of Lives.”
2022
  • Surpassed a major milestone: Trained one million caregivers in a single year.
  • Noora Health in the spotlight: Honored as a TED 2022 Audacious Project Grantee, our co-founders delivered a main stage TED talk on the power of love to improve healthcare at TED’s 2022 Vancouver conference.
  • Received the 2022 Skoll Foundation Award for Social Innovation
  • Our study, published in BMJ Open Quality, showed that following the intervention, dry cord care increased by 4% and skin-to-skin care by 78%. We also found a 56% decrease in newborn readmissions, a 16% decrease in post-discharge newborn complications, and a 12% decrease in maternal complications.
  • Launched a first-of-its-kind implementing partnership model with MAMTA Health Institute for Mother and Child to expand the Care Companion Program to Himachal Pradesh, India.
  • Revamped our general medical and surgical care program, adding training and content focused on non-communicable diseases.
2023
  • Expanded to our third country of operation: Indonesia
  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi named the tuberculosis family caregiver model as one of five key initiatives to end TB in India, setting the program up for national level scale.
  • Introduced a new primary healthcare model in Andhra Pradesh, deepening our reach at the community level.
  • Published a qualitative study in PLOS Global Health on the neonatal program in Karnataka, India, highlighting positive patient and caregiver perceptions and knowledge retention.
  • Published a study in PLOS Global Public Health showing an 18% reduction in newborn mortality risk for families attending Care Companion Program sessions, saving 9.2 babies per 1,000 live births.
  • Declared a Commitment to Action to advance family caregiver support and training globally at the Clinton Global Initiative 2023 meeting; participated in a panel on the ‘fourth trimester’ alongside Chelsea Clinton.
  • Attended the high-level UNGA meeting focused on urgently ending the global tuberculosis epidemic through equitable access to prevention, testing, treatment, and care.
2024
  • Expanded to our fourth country of operation: Nepal
  • A new implementation partner: Signed a three-year partnership agreement with One Heart Worldwide, a non-profit organization with more than a decade of experience in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates in remote and underserved regions of Nepal.
  • Featured in The New York Times: An NYT opinion essay captured a universal story of love and compassion through our collaboration with Jayadeva Hospital in Bangalore, India. The essay was also featured in the Sunday print edition.
  • Putting caregiving on the global health agenda: Co-hosted a panel discussion with Devex at the 77th World Health Assembly on the power of family caregiving and the crucial need for caregiver training and support in healthcare delivery. We welcomed speakers from the Indian, Bangladeshi, and Indonesian ministries of health, alongside high-level representatives from the WHO.
  • Expanded the Care Companion Program to cover HIV/AIDS: Following a partnership agreement with the Punjab State AIDS Control Society, we are building an intervention to support and train caregivers to increase treatment adherence of patients living with HIV/AIDS.
  • The U.S. Surgeon General visited Noora Health at Jayadeva Hospital in Bangalore, India and witnessed the Care Companion Program in action, speaking directly with patients, caregivers, nurses, doctors, our team, and hospital leadership.

The next chapter

By 2027, we’ve set our sights on reaching 70 million caregivers across India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Nepal.

“It’s not just about scaling our work, but scaling what works best for caregivers.”

A tapestry of care: Our expanded vision for supporting caregivers

Evidence fuels everything we do. As we look to the future, we’re doubling down to make our approach even more data-driven and rigorous.

We’re focused on making caregiver training and support an integral part of healthcare delivery across the world.

As tech and AI evolve, so too does our approach to using them as tools to improve and reimagine how we support caregivers.

Now more than ever, caregiving is on the global agenda. We’re preparing our programs to respond to these growing, diverse care needs and opportunities.

Thank you!

Thank you!

Love is transformative and can be an incredible resource for healing. For the last decade, it has been amazing to be a part of this. We’re so incredibly grateful for this amazing community, from the team we have the privilege to work with to nurses who support families every day, government partners, funders, other partners, and supporters who enable this work.

We all care — there’s a whole global community that we want to continue to get to know, grow, and partner with to keep making this work happen. Thank you for being on this journey with us.

Terima kasih.
